Coniston Country Fair offers a great opportunity to see aspects of local life. It is an chance to see and be involved in aspects of traditional Cumbrian pastimes. There will be a show of Fell Foxhounds. Hounds from several of the local packs will take part. There will also be an opportunity to meet the hounds and huntsman of the Coniston Foxhounds.
Several packs of Beagles will also be represented in a Beagle Show.
A Terrier Show will be followed by Terrier racing, which is great fun and not to be missed, later in the day. There is also a Lurcher Show during the afternoon. A ferret show and ferret racing are a great hit with the visitors, we hope they will prove just as big an attraction in 2007.
The Fell Race from the shores of the lake to the top of Coniston Old Man and back is one of the highlights of the day. Last year it was a tremendous success with over 100 runners from around the country taking part. The race will take place again in 2007 together with a juniors race.
A major attraction this year will be an air display by the RAF Search and Rescue helicopter with a rscue from the lake.
Vistors with dogs will be able to test their skills in the Dog Show, whilst children can show their prowess in the Childrens Sports which take place later in the afternoon, and bring their pets along to the Pet Show.
Various local crafts will be on display throughout the day along with a show and exhibition of locally made Walking Sticks. The Country Fair offers opportunity to see traditional local craftsmen at work including dry stone walling, slate dressing and clipping sheep.
Herdwick sheep are native to the Cumbrian fells and there will be a Herdwick sheep show during the day, giving vistors an opportunity to see the breed at its best. A Sheepdog Show & Sheep Clipping competition will also take place during the afternoon.
The dedicated Craft Marquee 'Crafts by the Lake' is a great success with 20 local crafts people displaying their products. Again, this will be a major attraction for 2007 with many will be demonstrating their art showing a wide and varied range of quality items.
One of the great spectacles of Cumbria is Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling and there will be an exhibition of this unique sport in the main ring later in the day. Don't miss it!
Shooting will also be represented on the day with a Gundog demonstration in the main ring.
